General Members Meeting

The August meeting was conducted by President Jeff Wishnie. Additional officers present were Site Director Tom Moock and Co-Activity Director Rich Leggett. The meeting was held at the Round Table Pizza in South San Francisco.

New Members/Visitors

New member Patrick Herms came to the August meeting. Patrick has been flying for about 5 months – mostly at the Dump – and got in 10 hours of flying in bali in May. Prospective new member Lui Jaimes joined us for the evening. Luis is originally from Columbia but lives in the Bay Area now. He had taken some lessons in Columbia but did not complete his certification, which he hopes to do soon. We were also joined by Alex Gagarin, a Russian pilot who has been in the Bay Area of late on business. He will be heading back in September but hopes to be back again in the coming months.

Officers' Report

Jeff Wishnie called the meeting to order. Jeff and Rich discussed the up-coming Demo Days event at Mussel Rock Park on August 27 and 28. Rich also reported that there was a fly-in at Slide Mountain on the weekend of August 13th as well as the BAPA First Responder course on August 20.

Tom reported that Dunlap is definitely open and that site managers Russ and Connie would love to see more pilots make use of the site. There is a new LZ that is easier to get to from launch and that camping is now available on top. Tom mentioned that the Wild Ass site is open. There was some discuss about the level of pilot that should consider flying there and the general agreement was that it was at least a mature P3 or P4 site. Tom also mentioned that Tollhouse is only available for use by competitions – the next BAPA XC competition that does not have a set location in is October.

Old Business

Minutes From Past Meeting - A motion was made to approve the July Minutes. The motion was carried and approved.

New Business

Jeff motioned that we approve $200 for drinks for the Demo Days event. The motion was approved.

Epic Flights

Tom Moock recently had an epic flight at Slide - he got up to cloudbase, which was about 13k. The conditions were: lift was at abour 1700 fpm near the edges of one particularly big cloud. He eventually came down about 15 miles away in a booming LZ. Well done Tom!

Entertainment

Eric Reed was kind enough to pull back the curtain in front of the Dr. Jack’s BLIPSPOTs and BLIPMAPs weather/flying conditions pages. Very interesting to see the type of data you can get about flying conditions in the US – it will be interesting to try to make use of the data. Many thanks Eric for sharing.
