It seems like this winter has been a bit slow for flying locally in the Bay Area.  We haven’t had as many storm fronts with good post-frontal conditions as usual.  But things will undoubtedly be looking up as spring approaches.

Wally Anderson led an informative reserve parachute clinic in February – all attendees were pleased to have their reserves come right out without a problem.  The first part of the clinic involved valuable discussion about reserves and other safety equipment and issues in paragliding.

At the February 1 BAPA meeting, Dan Foust did a great presentation on his trip to the remote Huarez Valley in Peru.  Dan’s photos were fascinating – the terrain is spectacular with mountains that are incredibly rugged and high.  The local people dress in colorful clothing and a wonderful variety of hats.  I’ve asked Dan to write an article for the March newsletter so that those who didn’t make the meeting can hear about his trip.  For anyone interested in an adventure, this sounds like a great trip to go on.

Upcoming items of interest include Jug Aggarwal’s talk on the XC League and how to use your GPS for the league – this presentation will follow the March 1 BAPA meeting in Milpitas.  Also, at the April 5 meeting, Loren Cox and Nova Dasalla will do a presentation on the Caribbean Challenge competition in the Dominican Republic.  In May, Tom Bair will do a presentation on flying in Alicante, Spain.

I hope everyone is having a good February – maybe doing some skiing or snowboarding, or perhaps visiting warmer climes such as BAPA Activities co-Director James Smyth who is currently diving and flying in Hawaii.

Here’s to cold and lifty conditions!
